wow! What an amazing 4 years. Originally; Red Earth, Rawhide and Ruddy Flies® was my chance to get out and satisfy my lifelong curiosity about outback Australia, the people, the lifestyle and, of course, the landscapes. I’ve used the tradition
al backdrop of the Aussie outback and mixed it with the most iconic of aussie cultures: the surfboard! covered in cowhide.
The juxtaposition created is a refreshing approach to see a contemporary ‘Australian Outback’ in a new way.
Maybe it was the 30 cowskinned surfboards in my trailer, or in my trusty Landcruiser even maybe on the roof rack, but everyone I met on my travels seemed to be in an open mind and offered great information; getting me off the beatin’ track for unique photo opportunities.
To properly get to grips with outback Australia or the Red Centre I felt I had to travel alone (apart from a cockatiel ‘Alice’) and have no agenda or script. With the unexpected bonus of heavy rain, rain that helped give this book a solid green - full of life, foundation of inspiration, and imagery. Im very proud of this book as I have taken it from concept, to photography through to design, and finally production; drawing on all my life skills.
The Australia I see in my head is now definitely more true and honest. Without a doubt this experience will change and shape the way I continue to highlight the friendly people and amazing landscapes of this whole country. This is the ‘Lucky Country’, get out there and experience it...
