Australia’s Red Centre has been given a new take, with the release of surfboard artist Anthony Pelto’s Red Earth, Rawhide and Ruddy Flies collection.
Inspired by connection between the land and the sea, this thirty something has given the outback a new and unique perspective by taking 30 surfboards, covering them in cowhide and photographing them in the Red Centre of Australia, including Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon.
“Australia’s Red Centre has some of the most unique landscapes, colours, flora and fauna, and of course, the people,” said Pelto.
“I thought that using the traditional backdrop of the Aussie outback, and combining it with the most iconic of Aussie cultures- a surfboard, would really give the viewer something to think about.
After a very successful run of the collection in Brisbane’s Powerhouse during July and August 2009, Pelto has released a book of these breathtaking photographs.
Giving the Australian art scene a new lease of life, Red Earth, Rawhide and Ruddy Flies includes stunning images of Palm Valley, Simpson Desert, Mount Sonder, the iconic Birdsville pub, the recently filled Lake Eyre, and a good swag of local characters- all with a cheeky and unique twist.
“Coffee tables are often adorned with landscape art, and I’d like to think that this collection will provide people with a fresh talking point, and a contemporary perspective on the way we view the outback.
Red Earth, Rawhide and Ruddy Flies is available through Dymocks book stores or online at www.pelto.com.au.
